| Common Eider (Somateria mollissima), North Hampton, NH. December 3rd, 2004. | ||||||
Update: October 23rd, 2006 - An excellent article photographic written by Martin Garner and Wilton Farrelly on differentiating between at least four different forms of Common Eider can be seen here. | ||||||
| An attractive male Common Eider (Somateria mollissima) with rather bulbous, orange bill lobes and comparatively short, pale grayish bill tip, creating a rather curious head and bill profile. This was especially distinct when both males could be seen alongside each other. The male in question also had notably pointed mantle ‘sails.’ The orange tone to the bill lobes was especially notable on this male in both sunny and overcast conditions. | ||||||
