December 2003. Hoary Redpolls (Careduelis hornemanni), Keene, New Hampshire.

December 2003 brought a memorable invasion of Common (Carduelis flammea) and Hoary Redpolls (Careduelis hornemanni) to the City of Keene, New Hampshire. Initially discovered on the Keene Christmas Bird Count on December 14th, Hoary Redpoll (Careduelis hornemanni) numbers increased towards the end of December with as many as six birds visible in birches along the Keene bike path. Some remained well into January 2005, allowing many birders to catch up with this charming northern finch for the very first time.

Most of the images included with this selection were taken on the Keene bike path near the center of town in the last ten days of December 2003. Other Hoary Redpolls (Careduelis hornemanni) discovered around Keene during the same period brought the total number of individuals to an esitmate of ten, with around 230 Common Redpolls (Carduelis flammea) also present in scattered feeding flocks.

All of the following images were taken using a Nikon Coolpix 995 with a Swarovski Habicht AT 80 HD.
