April 27th 2007. Madera Canyon, Santa Cruz County, AZ.
Flame-colored Tanager Piranga bidentata. Male.

Late afternoon may not be the best time to try for this bird at Madera Kubos, but after brief looks, a patient wait eventually produced extended views. What a handsome bird! This was only our second the ABA area, the first being a male in Upper Miller Canyon in July 2002. We also had this male singing down the road from Madera Kubos late in the day, and then we dropped down to Santa Rita Lodge to try (successfully) for Elf and Whiskered Screech Owls.
