| Dark-eyed (Slate-colored) Junco Junco hyemalis
| Didn't really do any birding today but noticed a handful of interesting species in and around the yard, including our first Dark-eyed Juncos
(3) of the fall. Other species here included Red-breasted Nuthatch,
Yellow-rumped and Blackpoll Warblers, and 2 Golden-crowned Kinglets.
Two Carolina Wrens were also singing this morning.
Just down the road, along the Norwottuck Rail Trail at a spot just inside the Hadley town line there was a Dickcissel in a
cornfield, close to the 4-mile marker post. Unlike the birds frequenting the
East Meadows, this one was very vocal giving the unmistakable, electric
buzzing flight call. A couple of Blackpoll Warblers were along this section of bike
path as well.
