Green-winged Teal
Anas (crecca) carolinensis, male.

Arriving with an influx of waterfowl to our area, this non-breeding plumaged male Green-winged Teal had an unusual amount of white around the base of the bill. Beyond that we couldn’t see anything else unusual about it, and it looked pretty normal in flight. It was part of a small flock of 37 Green-winged Teal that showed up briefly in the now flooded Swan Pool, in the East Meadows.

Update: An interesting illustration by Killian Mullarney is shown on p.53 of the Collins Bird Guide (Svensson et al). It depicts the head pattern of a molting male Eurasian Teal in October in direct comparison to a female Baikal Teal. The pattern shown in that illustration is not too dissimilar to the face pattern of the Green-winged Teal male seen in these images.
