Stilt Sandpipers (3)
Calidris himatopus.

These birds arrived during a heavy rainstorm with a large flock of Lesser Yellowlegs. Initially we thought there were two birds, but closer inspection of the images revealed three individuals. I must have missed the non-breeding plumaged bird standing behind the juvenile whilst focusing on taking images. The first individual was still preening on a different section of the sandbar whilst these images were being taken, so there had to be three birds. Stilt Sandpipers are evidently rare in Western Massachusetts and this species is listed amongst the vagrants in the new Bird Finding Guide to the region. However, Chris Gentes has already found one this autumn at North Hadley on August 21st.
