Western Kingbird
Tyrannus verticalis, juvenile.

A nice find for Harvey Allen on September 2nd. This bird was frequenting rough pasture on the western fringe of Lawrence Swamp, due east of South Amherst Common, along station road. I was lucky enough to relocate it in late afternoon on September 3rd and enjoyed very close views as it perched up with Eastern Kingbirds for extended periods. A rare but virtually annual autumn visitor to Western Massachusetts.

Other birds in the area included about 12 Eastern Kingbirds, 5 Eastern Phoebes and 3 Purple Finches.
