Glaucous Gulls, Larus hyperboreus.

Another exceptional showing of this species at Rochester, with an absolute minimum of six individuals discovered during the day. No adults have appeared so far this winter season, but a bird (shown above and below) was thought to be a third-winter and showed well for numerous birders.

Fig.2. Third-winter Glaucous Gull being typically aggresive towards other gulls, in this case, a juvenile/first winter smithsonianus.

Fig.3. Second-winter Glaucous Gull with adult smithsonianus. The large size of Glaucous Gull is evident in this shot.

Fig.4. Two first-winter Glaucous Gulls amongst Great Black-backed Gulls, the second bird being slightly out of focus at the rear.

Fig.6. First-winter Glaucous Gull amongst first-winter and adult Great Black-backed Gulls. This huge bird is probably a male.

Fig.7. First-winter Glaucous Gull, a smaller, more delicately built bird, perhaps a female.
