Onata Lake, Pittsfield, MA. November 18th, 2005.
Northern Shoveler Anas clypeatra.
Headed west today, exploring the Berkshires for the first time since we arrived in Amherst in the summer. It was rather cold, breezy and raw all day.

Selected highlights:

Eugene Moran WMA (08:05 - 10:05 hrs);

Red-tailed Hawk - 6 (3 migrating).
Red-breasted Nuthatch - Lose flock of about 40 in spruce woods. Could have been much more as I only went about 100 yards inside the wood. They were everywhere.
Black-capped Chickadee - c.10 with the nuthatches.
Horned Lark - 12
Snow Bunting - 16 landed briefly in the ‘west’ parking lot.
American Tree Sparrow - 3
Raven - 4

Chesire Reservoir
Ring-necked Duck - 1
Common Merganser - 1
Ruddy Duck - 2
Puple Finch - 1

Pontoosuc Lake
This place looked bleak at first but I found many birds by scoping from the park at the southern end of the lake. Most birds were down the western flank of the lake.
Canada Goose - c.250
Bufflehead - 2
Common Merganser - c.130, including several rafts of males.
Hooded Merganser - c.140
American Tree Sparrow - 1 Bull Hill Road.

Onota Lake
Dan Casey Memorial ‘causeway’ only, at the north end of the lake.
Canada Goose - c.300
Common Merganser - 28
Hooded Merganser - 20
NORTHERN SHOVELER - 4 females easily viewed on the northside of the causeway. Certainly my first in Western Mass this fall, and I’m not sure if I can recall seeing any other reports from the region.

Plainfield Pond
Hooded Merganser - 6
Raven - 2
