Turner's Falls, MA. November 1st, 2005.
Kumlien’s Iceland Gull Larus glauciodes kumlieni. juvenile/first-winter.
A really warm day, with a southern breeze and temperatures so comfortable that I was birding in a T-shirt until late afternoon. Not really a day for winter arrivals, but I was thrilled to see my first (Kumlien’s) Iceland Gull of the fall/winter at Turner’s Falls. Other large gulls were in short supply which made the appearance of this bird just that little bit more surprising.

Two locations were visited today:
South Quabbin (am) -
Horned Grebe - 5 (1 off Winsor Dam, 4 from Blueberry patch).
Common Loon - 1 Goodnough dike.
DUNLIN - 1 flew south calling at 10:00hrs over Winsor Dam.
Horned lark - 13
Snow Bunting - 8 Winsor Dam
Evening Grosbeak - 1 Winsor Dam.

Turner’s Falls (pm) -
Canada Goose - 1000+
Northern Pintail - 3 (2 new females, 1 long staying male).
American Wigeon - 5
American Black Duck - 2
Bufflehead - 2
Hooded Merganser - 3 males.
Common Merganser - 1 female.
KUMLIEN’S ICELAND GULL - 1 juvenile/first winter on the canal with Ring-billed Gulls.
American Herring Gull - 3
