December 11th, 2005. Salisbury Beach, MA.
Pacific Loon Gavia pacifica. (probably) Juvenile/First-winter.
Found near the breakwater just off Salisbury Beach in late afternoon and watched for about an hour. Unfortunately remained distant for most of the observation, hence the distant shots, but it sometimes came a bit closer to the breakwater. Looked settled and could stick around for a little while.
NB. The first four images on this page are freshly cropped from the original posted images on December 11th. They have been slightly enlarged to give a better appreciation of some of the field characters of this Pacific Loon. The image quality is poor due to distance, and the fading light of a winter afternoon. Unfortunately, this particular bird was never relocated.
Taken using Canon Powershot A-95 through Swarovski telescope.
