to cooler temperatures and north-west winds after the passage of a weak
cold front. Again, I spent some time at Turner's Falls going through
the geese though I couldn't find anything other than the usual
variation in Canada Geese. The Red-breasted Merganser was a nice surprise, giving all three species of merganser at this one spot.
Turner’s Falls Canal with Barton Cove (pm) -
Canada Goose - 1200+
Northern Pintail - 1, long staying male.
American Wigeon - 5 Bufflehead - 3 (1 male at barton Cove, 2 females canal).
Hooded Merganser - 3 males.
Common Merganser - 5 female/juvs.
RED-BREASTED MERGANSER - 1 female/juvenile. Found fairly late, after 16:30hrs.
KUMLIEN’S ICELAND GULL - 1 juvenile/first winter on the canal with Ring-billed Gulls. American
Herring Gull - 5, including 1 adult with a pale eye on the right side, and a
dark eye on the left side. Very strange, possibly blind in the left eye.
