Richardson's Cackling Goose Branta hutchinsii hutchinsii.

This Richardson’s Cackling Goose was discovered in late afternoon amongst c.600 Canada Geese. Although not pin sharp, the images do convey the fairly distinctive field appearance of a Richardson’s Cackling Goose. The combination of size, structure and overall pale appearance was especially notable on this bird in the field. Apart the diminutive size, the proportions were notably different from the surrounding birds. The goose was clearly small with a short stubby bill, which appeared disproportionately small when compared to the surrounding Canada Geese.
Link: Phil Brown took some excellent close up shots of a Richardson's Cackling Goose (as well as a Greater White-fronted Goose!) at Acton October 23rd, 2005.

Richardson's Cackling Goose (left).
Very small, pale breast, rather pale grayish upperparts and proportionately
small bill when compared to this typical Canada Goose.

Richardson's Cackling Goose (extreme right). Looking alert. Looks rather stubby, especially
around the bill and neck. Note the white half-band at the base of the short, black neck sock.

Richardson's Cackling Goose (center-left). The small, stubby bill is barely visible from
this angle. This particular individual had a rather broad white chin-strap.

Richardson's Cackling Goose (extreme right). Mostly hidden, but the head and bill still show-up well in this shot.
