December 21st, 2005. Salisbury Beach, MA.
Snowy Owl Nyctea scandiaca.
This dark Snowy Owl was the highlight at the end of a very cold day on the coast. I saw another two Snowy Owls on Plum Island earlier in the day, but not nearly so well as this bird from the public boat ramp at Salisbury. Other good species seen during the day included close views of the young male King Eider first seen on December 10th, and a couple of Kumlien's Iceland Gulls.
Taken using Canon Powershot A-95 through Swarovski telescope.

Snowy Owl in late afternoon sunlight.

The same bird, on exactly the same perch, taken just a couple of minutes later than the above three shots.
By walking just twenty yards to the south to change the angle of the shot, the whole
appearance of the bird in its surroundings had changed.
