October 15th, 2005. UMass playing fields, Amherst, MA.
| White-crowned Sparrow Zonotrichia leucophryes. First-winter (5).
| Very
wet with driving rain all morning. I did very little birding today but
escaped for an hour in late afternoon, finding some nice immature
White-crowned Sparrows of varied appearance. A couple of late thrushes
in the form of Veery and Swainson's Thrush were also found today.
Amherst
Veery - 1 in our yard on Baker Street.
Swainson’s Thrush - 1 just NW of UMass playing fields by Mill River.
White-throated Sparrow - 100+. Norwottuck Rail Trail between South
Maple and Snell Steet, in scattered clusters of 20-30 birds. Many had
gone by the morning of 10/16.
White-crowned Sparrow - 5 (all immature) just NW of UMass playing fields by Mill River.
Also c. 600 gulls departing from the UMass playing fields around 16:30hrs.
