July 15th 2007. Foss Beach, Rye, NH.
Horned Grebe. Podiceps auritus. Adult in breeding plumage.
First reported by Mark Suomala on July 7th, we found it in the same spot (the bay north of Ragged Neck) on a busy Sunday afternoon. I just managed to take a few images before a threatening cloud finally broke and brought some heavy showers. Horned Grebes are regular in winter off the NH coast but very rare in the summer months. This bird was especially handsome being in full summer dress.
Very few other highlights on the coast: 3 Roseate Terns and about 15 Wilson's Storm-Petrels between Odiorne Point and Seal Rocks, plus singles of Bank Swallow and Cliff Swallow over Foss Beach. Very few other birds at sea apart from Common Terns and a handful of Common Eiders.
