May 12th, 2007. Rail Trail, Amherst, MA. Magnolia Warbler Dendroica magnolia and others.
After getting a late start (10:30am), I decided to stay local and on foot. Had a nice outing on the bike path close to our home on Baker Street, Amherst. It ended up being an excellent session with a good selection of warblers actually seen (rather than heard only). A small pond in a meadow also held five species of shorebird, including five Least Sandpipers, 3 Spotted Sandpipers, 1 Solitary Sandpiper, 1 Greater Yellowlegs and 3 Killdeer. The bike path was full of singing Baltimore Orioles, but less usual was a singing male Orchard Oriole along the edge of a field. That one eluded the camera unfortunately.
Today's warblers were: American Redstart, Black-throated Blue, Magnolia, Blackpoll, Blue-winged, Nashville and many Yellow-rumped Warblers. Also of note, about 8 Wood Thrush, 7 Brown Thrashers, a Black-billed Cuckoo and a Swainson’s Thrush (SBL).
