January 23rd, 2007. Newport Country Club, Aquidneck Island, RI. Pink-footed Goose Anser brachyrynchus. (2) We only had very brief flight views of the Pink-feet until they flew back onto the golf course just after 3:30pm. We could hear them calling (disyllabic ‘wink-wink’) before we actually saw them, and I grabbed a few distant flight images through my binoculars as they flew in announcing their arrival. Though not the best shots, they show the ‘classic’ features of Pink-footed Goose in flight - short neck, with small compact dark brown head, strikingly pale blue-gray upperwing, and on landing, bright pink legs and feet. Both birds settled on the grass for decent scope views over the next forty minutes. Images taken using Canon Powershot A540 through Leica 8 x 42 binoculars. |
