May 24th, 2007. Montague Plains, Franklin Co., MA.
Whip-poor-will Caprimulgus vociferus. (10 - 15).

Brian Kane and I ventured out to the Montague Plains in the hopes of hearing and possibly seeing one or two Whip-poor-wills. Much to our surprise birds began calling early whilst their was still plenty of diurnal birdsong on the plains. The experience was excellent with four or five birds calling around us at once and we had actual views of two or three of them. Using a scope we were treated to amazing views of the male pictured below. Thanks to Brian for his extremely prompt spotlighting of this bird. A couple of American Woodcock were also displaying over the site, and as we drove out we had more Whip-poor-wills calling along the length of Lake Pleasant road. Many other species were present such as Prairie Warbler, Eastern Wood Peewee, Field Sparrow and several dsiplaying Purple Finch.
