May 10th, 2007. Rail Trail, South Amherst, MA. Yellow-billed Cuckoo Coccyzus americanus.
Nice looks at this Yellow-billed Cuckoo, my first local bird of the year, just off the bike path on the KC Trail. It was very vocal around noon but seemed to move off towards Mill Lane. Lots of other good birds along the rail trail today, including the Wood Duck shown below and a female Hooded Merganser. Several Blue-winged Warblers were also in full song, and Baltimore Orioles and Blue-gray Gnatcatchers were plentiful. In the middle of the very hot afternoon, a Swainson's Thrush appeared and then disappeared just as quickly but I did get a couple 'digi-bin' shots before it moved on.
