November 28th 2006. Turner's Falls, MA. Barrow's Goldeneye. Bucephala islandica. Female (1). A female Barrow's Goldeneye was again present on the power canal with Common Goldeneyes and showing well.  Female Barrow's Goldeneye (left). Always identifiable by the stubby orange bill, distinctive head shape and very dark rear end (especially the rear flanks).  Female Barrow's Goldeneye (third from left).  Female Barrow's Goldeneye (right). Classic head shape (steep forehead and bulky mane), and stubby orange bill. Overall darker than Common Goldeneyes (left), especially when viewed from the rear. |
