Thayer's Gull. Larus thayeri. Juvenile/first-winter. Captioned images and comparisons with
a dark Kumlien's Iceland Gull Larus glaucoides kumlieni.

This juvenile/first-winter Thayer's Gull discovered and thoroughly documented by Tom Johnson,
Justin and Devin Bosler, Edward J. Raynor and Cameron Rutt on December 21st. The following captioned
images draw on comparisons between this bird and a rather tricky
Kumlien's Iceland Gull seen at Rochester
Waste Water Treat Plant in December 2004.

More images of the Provincetown Thayer's Gull can be seen here:  at rest        in flight       more in flight

Further Thayer's Gull images can be seen here on the Japanese Gull Site.
Several of the juveniles featured in these pages compare favorably with the bird in Provincetown Harbor.
In addition, you may view Tom Johnson's original image selection of the P'town Thayer's from December 21st.

Kumlien's Iceland Gull at Rochester, NH. December 9th, 2004. Very similar to Thayer's Gull in overall impression
but showing rather coarse and irregular patterning on the scapulars and wing coverts. This bird is already showing
first-winter scapulars by early/mid December. Most Thayer's Gulls would show a full set of juvenile scapulars at
this time of year, as in the case of the Provincetown bird.

Nice flight image from above showing the so called 'venetian blind' effect by virtue of the contrast between the dark outer
webs and pale inner webs of the primaries.

The same bird flying away. The appearance of the plumage was hugely affected by changes in light and
cloud cover. In this image, the bird could have easily been glossed over as an American Herring Gull.

Quite long, slender bill. Compare head and bill jizz with the smaller-billed Kumlien's Iceland Gull below.

Kumlien's Iceland Gull at Rochester, NH. December 9th, 2004. Tertials near identical in color tone to primaries.
Coarse and irregular patterning on the scapulars and wing coverts creating a rather different impression to that
of the more uniformly patterned juvenile/first-winter Thayer's Gull.
