Surf Scoters
Melanitta perspicillata. (14 birds, all females).

The southern end of the Quabbin Reservoir was quite lively this evening with some nice, mostly distant rafts of migrating sea ducks. Closest was this flock of nine female Surf Scoters just off the dam wall at Winsor Dam. Scattered about the reservoir totals of 35 White-winged Scoter, 14 Surf Scoter, 36 Long-tailed Duck, 1 Horned Grebe, a probable Red-necked Grebe and two Common Loons made for a decent selection. An American Kestrel was also in the area.

I doubt if I've ever been this close to a flock of scoters at the Quabbin!
