Great Gray Owls, Bois de L'Ile Bizard, Montreal, Canada, February 5th, 2005.

We headed north into Canada, some five hours from Keene to try and see some previously reported Great Gray Owls. Nothing could have prepared us for what was to come, not just one owl but multiples and all at incredibly close range. Throw in a stunningly beautiful day and above average winter temperatures, and you have the makings of one of the most memorable days of winter birding anyone could wish for.

Most of these images were taken using a Nikon Coolpix 995 with a Nikon ED 3x tele converter lens. A few of the images were also taken through a Swarovski HD telescope using a Nikon Coolpix 995. The images have been cropped and the resolution reduced for the web.

“Are we really going to see Great Gray Owls around here?” That was our first reaction, having driven through urban and suburban Montreal to reach the parking lot at Ile Bizard Nature Park.

Two minutes later, Susannah enjoys her first Great Gray at point blank range just 100 metres from the parking lot!

And the views are just too good to be to true.............
