Aztec Thrush
Ridgwayia pinicola,
Madera Canyon, Santa Cruz County, AZ. July 29th, 2006.
Endemic to Mexican Sierra Madre, ABA Code (4).
We were exceptionally lucky to be in the early stages of a Birdfinders tour when the
reports of as many as nine Aztec Thrushes began to filter through the birding grapevine. The hike
into Upper Madera Canyon on a damp, foggy morning was rewarded with prolonged views of two Aztecs
feeding in their favored Choke Cherry tree. The assembled crowd of twenty or so birders was suitably
impressed and the birds seemed remarkably tolerant of the commotion going on below them!
