We
found these birds at the well known breeding sites under and close to,
the Florida turnpike in Homestead. Whether this form will be split from
the more common form (H. f. pelodoma)
breeding in Texas and New Mexico remains to be seen. Compared to my
memories of that form, the West Indian race certainly appeared smaller
in the field with a more uniform appearance, lacking the brighter rump
color of H. .f pelodoma.
The views were
excellent at this very urban location, and I took all of these images
with a Canon Powershot through Leica 10x42 binoculars.
* The ABA code above includes both forms of Cave Swallow breeding in the US.
