February 5th 2006. Worthing, Sussex, UK.
Common Gull Larus canus canus. Adult winter.
Mike Prince grabbed some nice shots of a couple of presumed nominate canus from the English south coast. Although not photographed alongside other species, the shots do offer some interesting comparisons with the RI Mew/Kamchatka Gull. As Mike put it with reference to the RI bird, "jizz wise your bird does look interesting ".

a) Common Gull 'canus canus' , Sussex, England Feb 5th '06. This bird looks rather delicate. Note the extensive white tip to the longest primary. Courtesy of Mike Prince.
b) RI 'Mew' Gull Jan 17th '06. I chose to compare these two images since both birds are in a similar posture. Here the RI bird appears considerably more robust with a long, stout bill, and very bulky chest. Courtesy of Rachel Farrell.

a) Common Gull 'canus canus' from the English south coast on Feb 5th. Shows much more extensive white in P10 and P9, with black limited to outer six primaries (not seven as in the RI bird). Courtesy of Mike Prince.
b) RI 'Mew' Gull on Feb 11th. Shows more black on the tips of P10 and P9, and clearly blackish marks on P4 (not present on the UK canus canus to the left). Also note the clear black 'tear drop' on the outermost primary covert. Courtesy of Paul L'Etoile.
