Barrow’s Goldeneye Bucephala islandica, Hampton Coast, New Hampshire, January 1st, 2005.

This female was found off Bicentennial Park in Hampton on New Year’s Day. The bill was bright orange-yellow and very distinctive in the field, especially when combined with the distinctive head shape and very dark brown head coloration. The images are not the best due to the distance, but this bird was very similar to a female in North Hampton on December 30th, 2004. A poor quality image of that bird is included at the bottom of the page and it’s possible that both sets of images relate to the same bird. This bird is also very similar to a female discovered in Rye on December 3rd, 2003.

Fig.4. This female was found in fading light off the Little Boars Head, North Hampton, December 30th, 2004. Shown here in the middle of preening, it could possibly be the same individual as in the pictures above from January 1st, 2005.
