This morning Brian Kane, Susannah Lerman and I set off very early from Amherst, MA to arrive at Goodrich Road, Sharon Springs at a reasonable hour. A Henslow's Sparrow could be heard singing as soon we stepped out of the car, and after a few minutes of careful telescope scanning, Brian spotted the Henslow's singing at the rear of the field. From that moment on we had a singing bird in view almost constantly for over an hour. We watched only from the roadside, hence the distant images presented here.
Feeling very pleased with our effort, we journeyed South-east to the small settlement of Freehold in Greene County to follow up a report of a Golden-winged Warbler close to Catskill Creek. After over an hour of scouting the area and checking a number of singing Blue-winged Warblers, we eventually located a singing male Golden-winged. This highly mobile bird initially gave us the run-around before settling on a bare branch by the roadside for several minutes. We were treated to staggering views at close range as the bird continued to sing. It finished off a long but thoroughly rewarding morning in central New York State, my first time birding in this beautiful area.
Special thanks to Brian and Susannah for making the day so enjoyable.
